What is hypnosis ?
Ericksonian hypnosis is very different from what you see on a hypnosis show. During a hypnosis session it is about bringing you into a more or less deep hypnotic state which then allows you to come into contact with your unconscious and thus to work on unconscious processes. While spectacle hypnosis aims to entertain you by using the hypnotic state and directing the subject in a very directive manner to make him perform various spectacular actions. Ericksonian hypnosis, on the other hand, is very permissive and non-directive with the aim of helping the patient to recontact his unconscious resources.
We have all experienced hypnotic states since hypnosis is above all a natural phenomenon. For example when we are lost in our thoughts fixing a point and that we do not realize the time which has passed. Often times at such times, if we are surrounded, someone will wave to us to bring us back to the present moment. Reverie is a natural hypnotic state.
So hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. The objective is to access unconscious processes allowing the patient a better understanding of a lived experience, of a difficulty. By addressing unconscious processes it is then possible to achieve changes in behavior, or to overcome a trauma, a difficulty in life, an internal conflict, or even anxiety among others. Hypnosis then makes unconscious resources accessible.
